013: Take a break
Love, Dad, is a real-life series of ongoing letters to my children. While these letters are intended to be read one day by them, I feel that many of us — parents and non-parents alike — can connect with the stories and moments that forever bond us to those whom we love.
Hi again,
Sometimes you’ll need a break… and that’s OK.
Life moves fast. The days are a jumble of tasks and must-do’s and want-to-do’s. In that, you will inevitably become tired. Not just physically, but also mentally and creatively.
It’s ok to take breaks.
You’ll feel it coming. You may start to feel less inspired, not as creative and overwhelmed by even small jobs. You might audibly sigh, or your eyes might start to feel tired and hollow, or your spirit may feel dimmed.
Listen to your body and pay attention to the cues.
When you feel like you aren’t shining as bright and every little thing feels like you’re climbing a mountain, I want you to remember to do just one thing.
Sleep on it.
And if you wake up and still feel not quite right, take a break.
Take a day off and do something you love. Conversely, take a day off and just be. Go where the wind takes you and let your mind and body rest.
Society and the hustle culture will tell you not to do this.
But listen:
It’s ok to take a break.
Love,
Dad

what an incredible message. i truly wish i understood this when i was younger - still struggling to put it into practice! i can already feel what an impact releasing themselves from the world's expectations will make.
